Tri Cities Regional Airport in Tennessee, about eighty miles southwest, is the nearest airport with regular commercial flights, around an hour and a half by car. Roanoke Regional Airport, around a hundred and twenty miles east, is another option with more connections. Both require a rental car, as public transport in the region is minimal.

Virginia Highlands Airport near Abingdon serves general aviation and private planes. For most travellers, flying into Tri Cities or Roanoke and driving the last part through the mountains is the realistic option.

By road, US Route 460 leads east to Bluefield and on toward Roanoke, while US Route 19 runs south toward Abingdon and Interstate 81. Interstate 77 is reachable via Bluefield. Travel times in the mountains are longer than distances suggest because of curves and grades.

Heading west, Route 460 continues through Grundy toward Kentucky, a scenic but slow mountain road. Truck traffic is heavy, especially during coal and timber shipments, so patience is required.

Within Tazewell County, a car is essential. There are no taxis to speak of and limited ride hailing coverage. Richlands is about five minutes away, and Tazewell town around twenty minutes.

Winter conditions can affect all these roads from December to March. Snow and ice on mountain passes sometimes close routes briefly, so checking the Virginia Department of Transportation road conditions before driving is advisable.
